If you have Kaspersky Internet Security installed on your PC or laptop you may have noticed a a Kaspersky Secure Connection icon on your desktop. This small tool actually packs quite a punch when it comes to keeping your privacy protected. I want to explain to you exactly what Kaspersky Secure Connection is, why you need it and how you can use it to protect your privacy online.

What is Kaspersky Secure Connection?

Kaspersky Secure Connection hides your public IP address and location and gives you the ability to securely transfer your internet data through an encrypted tunnel. This encrypted tunnel is actually called a Virtual Private Network (VPN) . Traditionally VPN’s have been used by large enterprises to allow employees to connect to business resources, but VPN’s are becoming more popular for use in households due to the increase in data theft and privacy breaches.

The Kaspersky Secure Connection software has a simple interface (pictured below). There are really only two components;

  1. An on and off button
  2. A server selection box where you can choose which VPN server you want to connect to

The only other important element to the interface is the data usage counter on the bottom of the application, which tells you have much data you have used for the day.

Do I need a VPN?

In a word, No, you don’t need a VPN BUT, we would strongly advise that you atleast consider itHere are 3 reasons why you should think about implementing a VPN into your everyday internet use.

  • Protecting Your data
  • Hiding your location
  • Accessing Different/Blocked content

These are just a few of many reasons why people use a VPN.

One of the things that makes this VPN special is the fact that it is backed by such a large, and well known company in Kaspersky. Unlike some smaller companies that promote their VPN products Kaspersky is highly regarded as one of the top technology security companies in the world.

Is there limitations to how much data I can use?

The free version of Kaspersky Secure Connection does have a download limit. It offers users 200mb per day. This may sound like a decent amount, but it really isn’t when you consider how much data even browsing a few news sites and checking Email uses.

Download Limit on Kaspersky Secure Connection

The 200mb limit is probably only going to get you through a short part of your day, especailly if you are using the internet a lot.

If 200mb doesnt sound like enough for you, then there is a premium option available that offers unlimited data transfer on 5 devices. Meaning you can use Kaspersky Secure Connection on your Desktop, Laptop, Table and Smartphone (Apps Available). We will disucss the pricing and feauteres of the premium version of Kaspersky Secure Connection shortly but let’s first consider a real-world example of when you might use the free version of Kaspersky Secure Connection.

Let’s assume you are going on a week-long holiday overseas. You bring your laptop along as you need to check work Emails and make a few transactions online with your bank.

When you arrive at your hotel, you are greeted with your room key and a password to access the hotel WiFi. Little do you know that someone else staying in the hotel is a computer hacker just waiting for someone just like you to connect to the publicily accessible, hotel WiFi. They can use a simple program to create a fake access point that looks exactly like the hotel Wifi. Once you connect to the hackers fake WiFi access point they can see everything you do online.

In this case, even if you are connected to the fake WiFi access point using a VPN like Kaspersky Secure Connection will encrypt all of your data travelling over the network and mitigate the chances of the hacker being able to access your data dramatically.

Is Kaspersky Secure Connection Actually Secure?

There has been much discussion around the strength of VPN security. I am here to tell you that Kaspersky Secure Connection is very secure. It uses AES 256 bit encryption which is the industry standard in VPN security. In fact, theroetically it is uncrackable.
